Spotify Reaches Five Million Users

Spotify on the Wall

Spotify, the global music streaming platform has announced that they have now reached a following of five million users and has paid out a staggering £311m ($500m) in royalties to artists the world over. VIVO has also made a statement claiming that they have paid £125m (or $200m) in royalties.

With an unlimited music consumption to the users that subscribe to the 'premium service' at £9.99 (or $4.99) a month, or a free service which allows a users to listen to a track a maximum of five times a month and includes adverts to generate revenue, Spotify is an extremely competitive middle-man agent that lines its sights against the global music piracy pandemic. Spotify has, without a doubt, been one of the most influential music platforms in recent years. In the past decade, the global music industry has been cast into dark times and shrunk to less than half its size where we have seen the demise of many independent record labels. Subsequently with this effect we have also seen the depression of many of the most aspiring artists. However, with the introduction of these online music streaming platforms, such as Spotify, it has, in fact, acted as an agent to combat this issue by promoting lesser known artists through suggestions made upon the individual users listening patterns. Even if the exposure of these small artists on these platforms may be minor in comparison to bigger named artists it can mean a considerable amount through exposure and a small amount of revenue generated through royalties.

From experience as a record producer I can tell you that two of the most rewarding things to happen to you is to see that your music is being listened to on a considerable scale and seeing that royalty payment show up in your account. This is satisfaction as a musician whoever you are.

Currently there are a number of competitors in the market to Spotify. This clearly demonstrates that the music industry acknowledges that music streaming may be the silver bullet for the industry. As rival music streaming sites (Jango, Pandora and Xbox Music) are seemingly popping up all over the place and across many platforms we easily can note a positive growth in this sector of the market.
