Sanctuary Records Is Bought By BMG

Well it seems to be the season where a number of labels are seeming to change hands of power. Following Universal Music Groups acquisition of EMI for £1.2 bn late last year they have been dividing up the former major into smaller components in a bid to make a profit and conform to the EU sanctions placed upon the sale.

Now BMG, a German multinational label which has teamed up with the private US equity firm KKR, have acquired Sanctuary records from a reported £40m bid. In deal which includes over 170,000 recordings by artists such as Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, Pet Shop Boys, Styx and Meatloaf the catalogue appears on the surface to have a slightly dated feel but one which is also filled with  popular 'legacy' artists. This is just another strategic move that aims to acquire a large database of artists from Universal, as last December BMG also bought the Mute Records catalogue.

On the surface it is likely that we will see many more acquisitions by BMG, a financially fuelled operation, which likes to keep its investors happy by banking on the profits of past artists.
