Rode Launch First 24bit 96kHz Recorder For iPhone
Today RØDE Microphones have launched the first professional recording device for iPhone or iPad that allows the user to professionally record at 24bit 96kHz quality. Named the iXY, RØDE boasts that this is far from just a 'gimmick' as it features a built-in high pass filter to block out unwanted handling noise, a dedicated onboard A/D converter and a matched pair of 1/2-inch cardioid microphone capsules (in an 90 degree XY configuration) that makes for 'rich, smooth and accurate' stereo recordings.
With the hardware itself RØDE clearly demonstrates that this a serious device which they claim to be used in capturing live music performances in songwriting sessions, local café gigs, large stadium shows, band rehearsals; although here it will be interesting to see how the condenser capsules deal with louder transients. In addition to this the iXY comes with a windshield which is intended to be used in environments where there will be some degree of wind. RØDE do directly say that the iXY is intended to be used as an 'on-camera' recording interface where the audio can be introduced from the iPhone in post-production for DSLR video recording. However, the devices placement capabilities don't just stop here! The iXY can be used to capture recordings from meetings and lectures and finally can act as a high-fidelity dictaphone for reporters in the field. What more could you want?
Within the dedicated app the user has the ability to adjust the input level of the microphones, or they can select the device to monitor the levels for you and automatically adjust them. For those who are not familiar with input monitoring the latter feature is one that is a welcome feature for the noise. On top of this the app features various equalisation or compression effects that can be added or monitored on-top of the recording. Finally, the user is not just limited to recording at the highest resolution of 24bit/96kHz which would eat up memory on the iPhone. For those who have limited space or don't need to record as high as that then they are able to select a number of of different recording parameters.
Currently the RØDE Rec App is available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and allows the user to perform non-linear editing, geo-tagging and photo-tagging in addition to being able to allows one-touch direct uploading of audio to SoundCloud, Dropbox, iTunes, FTP and E-Mail. The standard model costs $199.00 but is important to inform all of you that this interface was designed for devices that DO NOT use the 'Lightning' connector (such as the iPhone 5) however, you can upgrade to the IPhone 5 device within 30 days of purchase for an additional $99 plus P&P. All in all, this product is extremely exciting and The Pro Audio Web Blog is looking forward to publishing a review when it begins shipping later this month.
