Mac OS X Mavericks - Should I Upgrade?

Mac OSX Mavericks

Announced earlier this year, Mavericks has been the highly anticipated event on the 2013 tech calendar. Boasting an array of new exciting features and improvements, this might be the biggest leap forward in design for OS 10 to date. A fresh look and feel with fully usable multiple screen control is just a dip into the multitude of updates. Apple have also brought two Apps that originated in iOS to the Mavericks, iBooks and Maps, thus allowing further integration between users iOS devices and their desk/ laptops.

Released for download last night in the UK everyone was shocked, but pleasantly surprised, with the zero price tag attached to the product. Apples intent, I believe is to suck everyone into upgrading, so they can say in their next keynote that 80 or so percent of Mac users run the latest software and so on. But still free is always a word we like to hear right?

Should I Upgrade? Experience tells me that, especially in the pro audio world, change scares us all! Driver compatibility issues and hardware malfunctions can cripple a once fully functioning studio. Always always check and double check with your software and hardware manufactures to see if they support the new OS. Next, back up your hard-drive! You should be doing this anyway, however we all forget sometimes, but don’t let yourself be the one that gets the corrupted hard-drive during OS update. Simple stuff you may say, but there are already reports of installs freezing and many users having to force quite during installation. However if you do upgrade and it works fine for you I’m sure the new abilities and performance upgrades more than outweigh the few bugs for some.

Go at your own speed, don’t upgrade because it is new and exciting, upgrade so it enhances your set up or studio. Most manufactures will have updates out soon, and I am sure the wait will be worth it to avoid the pain of crash logs and endless re-installing.
