HoRNet AutoGain Dynamic Plug-In Review

hornet autogain review

TL;DR:

HoRNet AutoGain Review. AutoGain is a dynamic plugin by an independent plug-in designer that offers a clean interface and simple control system that works well.

Review Preface:

I have had the opportunity to use a large number of plug-ins during studio sessions and mixing, and I’m always looking for new ones to aid and add to my workflow, with the aim of maximising my work time and production levels.  Mixing in the box has never been more prevalent and is becoming a much more affordable way of getting the most out of your mixes on a modest budget, so it is good to be able to review a great little plug-in from HoRNet, the HoRNet Auto Gain. (€11.99E/£10.24)

Firstly what is auto gain? This is an audio production method that inputs the original output of a signal back into the plug-in/hardware, then calculates a ‘best working’ level for that signal. Parameters and controls located on the plug-in/hardware can give you a control over how sensitive the process is. The HoRNet Auto Gain looks like a promising and affordable plug-in that I'm excited about using in a project for review.

Design and Functionality:

The user interface is sleek, but basic and easy to use with no bugs (to my knowledge) to speak of. The metering is accurate and not misleading and the overall look and design makes it extremely easy to understand the controls and functions of the plug-in. The plug-in offers controls for automatic gain riding, adjustable reaction speed, adjustable reference sensitivity and adjustable riding range. There is also a selector module for automation tools, giving you access to write, read and ignore the output signal from this plug-in to your DAW.

When in use I found controlling the app extremely intuitive, compared to some other auto gain plug-ins, and was able to start smoothing out a vocal line in a project straight away. I found a setting for all the controls that worked for the vocal line and let the plug-in write the automation data for a chorus of the project. The result was pleasing, however not as smooth as I first thought. I repeated the process a few times, to check it wasn’t my settings, and I found it was tricky to get the sensitivity right. One last small issue is that the meter every so often will lag then snap to the next position. This does not take much away from the usability of this plug-in at all, just being smoother is always a plus!

Review Conclusion:

I have in the past used many other auto gain plug-ins, however for the price this plug-in provides more than enough functionality and quality for a project/demo studio. With its appealing price tag and simple user interface, the Pro Audio Web Blog gives the HoRNet Auto Gain a 4 out of 5 stars.
