Sir Elton John Is To Win The First ‘Brit Icon’ Award
Sir Elton John Is To Win The First Brit Icon Award
It has been announced this week that the Brit Awards will be introducing a new category, the “Icon Award”. The award is said to honour “true Icons of cultural life”, and is to be awarded to “musical superheros”, according to Brit Awards CEO Geoff Taylor. The inaugural winner will be Sir Elton John.
Sir Elton will be receiving this award at a ceremony held on September 2nd in central London. It will then be broadcast later that month. Elton is also expected to play a set at the ceremony, which will be separate from the main Brit Awards show. The Chairman of the Brit Awards, Christian Tattersfield, is quoted as saying “ Britain led the world when it came to making great music. Sir Elton is amongst the greatest of these living legends, inspiring generations of fans and musicians alike with his era defining music, and there can be few more worthy recipients of the inaugural Brits Icon award.”
This performance will be a return of sorts for the legend, who has sold over 250million records in his 49 year career. Earlier in 2013, Sir Elton was forced to pull out of all of his summer tour dates, due to being diagnosed with appendicitis. However, he seems to have made a full recovery. In a statement about the awards ceremony, Elton appeared to be excited to return to the stage and receive this honour, claiming "It's a tremendous honour and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I'm really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion".
A spokesperson for the awards ceremony has been keen to point out that this award will not be replacing the “Outstanding Contribution To Music” award, which has previously been received by artists such as Robbie Williams and Paul McCartney. Instead, this new award will create a “Hall of Fame” of sorts, which honours musicians who have made a major impact on the cultural landscape.
