Billboard Announce Adele As Top Artist of 2012

The Pro Audio Web Blog

We all know that the transatlantic boarder is one difficult nut to crack, especially if you are a British artist. It is just a fact that both Great Britain and America have slightly different tastes, senses, styles, and scenes when it comes to music. However, this British born and raised artist has made ways with her '21' album today being named as the top-selling on the iTunes store in America for 2012. This is yet another accolade a constant string of awards. In February, almost a year after the album was released, the twenty-four year old sensation swooped a whopping six Grammys including 'Single of the Year' and 'Artist of the Year', Golden Globe nominations, and won the contract to producing the iconic opening track for the huge James Bond box office hit 'Skyfall'.

Just after the '21' album was released, in March of 2011 the album shot to number one where it took an amazing nineteen months for it to leave the 'Top 10' album charts. With the success of the '21' album in conjunction with her single  'Skyfall', Adele has become a major highly influential artist on an international scale and subsequently her pre-tax earnings of $35 million (£26.6m) landed her as the twenty-second highest earning musician this year (see our article here). With all of this considered, today Adele was revealed to be the prestigious Billboard Top Artist of 2012. In deciding whom to name as the Top Artist Billboard consider a number of facts such as chart performance, streaming and social data.

Whilst Adele (Columbia Records) can be considered as the British artist figurehead of the year it is worthwhile noting a number of other awards that were won by British artists this year. Mumford & Sons (Island Records - Universal Music Group) topped the Rock, Alternative and Folk Album categories for their award winning album 'Babel' (see our review here). Ellie Goulding's album 'Lights' (Polydor Records) was also within the top 10 artists of 2012, appearing in the number five position, The Wanted (Island Records - Mercury Records) gained the sixth position for 'You Came' and the British x-factor raised boy-band 'One Direction' (Columbia Records) came in at number ten with 'What Makes You beautiful'.

With many British artists winning so many awards this year it has been a great year for the British music industry within the international community.
